Executive Summary

This paper explores how, when, and why high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth donors engage with a constellation of advisors as part of their philanthropy journeys, as well as how these advisors engage and collaborate with one another. Specifically focusing on the U.S. context—recognizing key cultural, historical, and infrastructure differences in other geographies—we provide a typology of the primary entities advising wealthy or affluent donors.

  • An evolving advisory landscape. U/HNW donors increasingly work with organizations that center philanthropy expertise and services, such as independent philanthropy advisors and boutique firms, and full-service philanthropy firms and institutional advisors.

  • A range of giving vehicles and mechanisms. Giving tools like donor-advised funds (DAFs), charitable LLCs, and impact investing provide more pathways for donors to engage in philanthropy at their preferred level of involvement.

  • The rise of collaborative giving. Philanthropic collaboratives and collaborative giving allow donors to join forces on shared interests and govern their giving collectively.
